How to Rid Your Attic of Squirrels

Things Required
  • Flashlight
  • Live Trap
  • Plywood
  • Hammer
  • Screws
  • Other Roof Repair Materials
Directions
  • The first task is to find out whether there is a squirrel in the attic or not. Most of the people panic without reasons. It might be that some animal outside is making the noise. Take a flashlight into the attic and look for some damage, like tears in insulation batts or ripped up newspapers. Also take notice of the entrance hole of the squirrel.
  • Once the entrance hole is determined, look for chew marks around the fascia, where the roof meets the wall. In a dark attic, the holes are easier to find, as light chips in from outside. These holes are generally located at places which have become rotten.
  • Fix plywood to the place from the exterior. Even better, you can go for a complete change in the front board.
  • Once this is fixed, make sure you do not have any squirrel trapped in the attic, as it would die and make things worse for you. Set a trap for the squirrel. Put a peanut dipped in butter in a trap. Check in after a day or so. If you do not find a squirrel in the trap, you are saved, but do not be relaxed about it.
  • Hunt for a squirrel nest. There may be baby squirrels inside the attic. If you have located any baby squirrels, then do not throw them. Instead call on some animal preservation organization and give them to the organization.
  • The next step is to clean the attic and remove all the damage that the squirrels might have caused. If there are any remaining from the nest, carefully put them in a poly bag and dispose off.
  • Spray the area of the nest with a solution of one ounce of bleach and one pint of water, in a spray bottle, and disinfect it. Wash your hands thoroughly after the cleanup and change clothes.
  • For future, make sure you inspect the exterior of your house, so that you are able to prevent squirrels from entering your attic in the first place.
