Cleaning Ceramic Tiles

Daily Cleaning
Whether your have used the ceramic tiles on floor or walls, you need to give them a light cleaning on a daily basis. For the purpose, make use of a sponge/clean cloth and water. Soak the sponge/cloth in water and use it to wipe the tiles clean. Now, take a clean cloth and use it to dry the tiles. This will help prevent the build-up of dirt, mold, mildew and hard water stains on the tile surface.

Grout Cleaning
Grout is the material used in between the tiles, which holds them together. Made of cement and fine sand or acrylic materials, it tends to accumulate mold, mildew and stains over time. For cleaning the grout, make a solution of 1/4 cup mild detergent and one gallon water. Dip a sponge in the said solution and clean the grout with sponge. After giving a thorough cleaning, rinse the tiles and grout with plain water.

Cleaning Excessive Dirt
In case your tiles and grout have become exceedingly dirty, detergent solution will not work. In such a case, you will need to make use of chlorine beach solution. To make the solution, take one quart of chlorine bleach and add it to two gallons of water. Let the solution sit for approximately 15-20 minutes. Now, soak the sponge, for wall tiles, or mop, for floor tiles, in the solution and use it to give the tiles a though rubbing.

Let the solution sit on the tiles for 10-20 minutes and then rinse them with plain water. Now, use the detergent solution, as mentioned in the previous step, to remove any remaining traces of chlorine bleach. Follow this with plain water rinsing. Finally, wipe the tiles dry, with a clean, soft cloth. Since chlorine is harmful for skin, it is advisable to wear rubber gloves throughout the process of cleaning tiles.

Tip: While cleaning ceramic tiles, avoid using any harsh abrasives, such as scouring powder. These cleansers may scratch and damage the surface of your tiles.
