Summer is a good time to get a beautiful tan but it can also give heat stroke, dehydration and heat rash. Heat rash, also known as prickly heat rash, is an irritating outbreak of the skin owing to blockage of the sweat glands over certain parts of the body. It appears as small, red bumps or translucent blisters filled with fluids on the parts of the body that do not receive enough ventilation such as on the elbow, under arms, waist, upper chest, creases, neck etc. It occurs in people of all ages, but infants and children are more prone to it because their sweat glands haven’t fully developed. People living in tropical, humid countries suffer more from this condition. Even though it does not affect the overall health of a person, it does affect the behavior and thus there are chances of many people getting offended easily. Prickly Heat Rash Treatment

  • The most effective treatment for prickly heat is mixing oatmeal powder in the bath tub. Plunge into the bathtub, and oatmeal powder will soothe the skin and reduce itchiness. You could also add corn starch and baking soda to that water.
  • Aloe vera can be applied on the affected areas since it will act as an antiseptic and cools the tissues.
  • To ease the irritation, heat rash sun creams and ointments are available.
  • To give instant relief in heat rash, dust the powder of sandalwood all over the affected areas.
  • Applying a paste made of the seeds of jambul all over the body is another effective treatment for prickly heat.
  • Apply a product that contains salicylic acid, such as acne treatment pads, all over the rashes. This will help dry the bumps and unclog the pores.
  • Lavender oil is very good for treating heat rash. It is the only oil that can be applied directly over the skin and it soothes and cools the skin. It is also safe for children.
  • Honey is another effective treatment for heat rash. It calms and cools the affected area and reloads natural sugars that vanish during over-exposure to the sun.
  • Cover the blisters by applying gram paste or besan paste and let it dry. Wash it off with cold water. 
  • Drinking lots of water can help maintain cooler body temperature.
  • In order to lessen the itching, apply hydrocortisone cream. Rub the cream on the affected areas until it absorbs fully.
  • Rubbing ice cubes on the affected areas is another wonderful way of getting rid of prickly heat. The ice cubes will cool the itchiness and puncture the swellings.
  • Apply a paste made of powdered bark of pipal tree and finely powdered brick on the affected areas all over the body to ease out the pain and reduce the swellings.
  • On the affected skin apply green heena ground in water.
  • You could also grind neem leaves in water and apply that mixture to the affected areas.
  • Another effective remedy for prickly heat is to dissolve fuller’s earth (multani mitti) in water and make a thin paste and spread it over the affected parts. Wash it with cold water once the paste dries.
  • Take a small piece of sandalwood and rub it on a stone with rose water. Mix a pinch of powdered alum and apply on the affected area twice or thrice a week. This is another useful treatment for prickly heat. 
  • Another effective way to cure heat rash is to liquefy a tablespoon of soda bicarbonate in half cup of water and mix in one tablespoon of rose water. Dip it in cotton wool and apply it on the affected areas. 
  • To hydrate the skin greasy moisturizers should be avoided since they can trap the heat and cause more uneasiness to the burning blisters. Make sure the affected areas are clean and dry to stop the infection from spreading to other body parts.
