The Golden Globe Awards were announced in what was a quick ceremony, held at Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, California, yesterday. One would expect a red carpet welcome, glittering venue and a parade of screaming fans, clicking paparazzi, teary-eyed winners with their list of ‘Thank Yous’ and a gala dinner.

Julie Christie won the Golden Globe for the category of Best Actress for the movie Away From Her. Her portrayal of a woman who is institutionalized because of the Alzheimer’s disease has bowled over critics and movie-lovers alike. The movie, directed by Sarah Polley, tells the story of an elderly man Grant (Gordon Pinsent), who realizes that his wife Fiona (Julie Christie) is suffering from Alzheimer's. They arrive at a mutual decision that she should be sent to a nursing home to ensure better treatment.
Soon, the disease takes over and she forgets her husband but gets emotionally attached to a wheelchair patient (Michael Murphy) at the nursing home. Her husband is heart-broken when he sees this. Though the film has an unspoken melancholy, the way it has been shot is truly romantic. The performance by Julie Christie is absolutely flawless and you actually believe that she is an Alzheimer’s patient. This film is a must see for all those who appreciate realistic acting and a great storyline.
