The ‘Filmfare Movie Awards’ is the most-prestigious annually organized function at Mumbai for recognizing and honoring the best new and old talents in the Indian film industry. This award ceremony was first organized in 1953 and used to be known as The Clares after Filmfare critic, Clare Mendionca. It’s a much coveted affair for the Indian film fraternity because receiving an award directly translates into further plum projects and skyrocketing of one’s career. Who is to be awarded is decided jointly by an expert panel and public voting.
During the initial days, there used to be just five award categories in the Filmfare Movie Awards Ceremony - for the best film, the best director, the best actor, the best actress and the best music director. In the present times, the Filmfare Award category has risen to as high as 31 to give recognition to others contributing in film-making. The said figure also comprises two Lifetime Achievement Awards. There is, however, a separate category for film-critics awards determined by famous film-critics rather than votes of the general public.
