Nostalgia took over the extravagant event when Fiat 500 was named the Car of the Year 2008 in Europe. This announcement comes barely weeks after CAR announcing this compact hatchback as the Car of the Year 2008. Fiat has again proved itself in the compact car segment and has already won this honor 12 times. Starting from 1967, when it won this award for Fiat 124 to 2004, when it won the award for Fiat Panda, this year it has proved itself again with the Fiat 500.
So far, the Fiat 500 has been a mind blowing success and almost 105,000 orders have been placed in Italy and Germany. Fiat 500 is a very sleek retro looking car and what adds icing to the cake is the fact that the engines satisfy all the norms of Euro V. being compact makes it easy to maneuver in traffic and it consumes less parking space than other cars and SUV’s. Fiat has been an age old name in the automobile industry and this new car may just turn the falling image of the company.
Fiat 500 scored over Mazda2, its closest competitor in the event. Fiat 500 received maximum number of points from thirty four of the fifty eight Jury members. The design of the Fiat 500 is refreshingly new and the advertising has been brilliant. Looks like Fiat is all set to strike the winning formula with its compact hatchback. Everyone remembers the launch of the Fiat 500, on July 4th in Italy. It was like a national festival and totally justified given the re-birth of Fiat with this new car. Now with the Car of Year 2008 award, the celebration will grow manifold.
