Dev D Review

Genre: Romantic Drama

Star Cast: Abhay Deol, Mahi Gill, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Kalki Koechlin
Release Date: 6th February 2009

The first thing that strikes you, when you watch Dev D, is that the movie does not conform to conventions Dev D Movieat all. It presents the age-old story of Sarat Chandra's Devdas, but with a contemporary outlook. Right from the screenplay to the cinematography, plot narration and dialogues, every aspect of the movie reminds us of the 'modern world' as its backdrop. More than a heartbroken hero, the Devdas in 'Dev D' is representative of the present generation 20-somethings, who are stuck between traditions and modernity.

Not only Devdas, the movie shows all the characters of Sarat Chandra's novel in a new light, consistent with the present-day world. While Paro knows how to move on in her life, Chanda (Chandramukhi) is a school student who has ended up working as a sex worker at night. One thing that disappointed us was that sequences between Dev and Chanda lacked fizz. Even the exchange between Dev and Chunni lack the spark that it needed to generate.

Kashyap's direction was up to the mark and there was hardly any character in the film, who could not justify his/her presence. Abhay Deol is getting even better with time. His unconventional hero image, carried forward from 'Manorama Six Feet Under' and' 'Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye', impressed us this time as well. While Mahi played her part to perfection, Kalki wasn't too bad either. All in all, this is a movie you wouldn't mind spending your money on.

Dev D Pre-release Review
If you think that Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's classic novel 'Devdas' has been made into a movie enough times, it’s time for a rethink. Director Anurag Kashyap is all set to come out with another adaptation of 'Devdas', though this time, it has been set in the contemporary world. This is the world of mobile, internet and chatting, rather than the traditional means of communication - like telegram. With the star cast of Abhay Deol, Mahi Gill, Dibyendu Bhattacharya and Kalki Koechlin, the movie is scheduled for release on 9th January 2009.

In the traditional Devdas, the protagonist, after losing his love, starts on a path of self destruction. The legendary lover finds solace with alcohol, which ultimately leads him to the footsteps of death. In Dev D, the contemporary Devdas, the male protagonist (Abhay Deol),is the son of a zamindar (tax collector), apart from being a self-pitying hypocrite. He is so pathetic that he finds it impossible to summon the strength and courage required to even stand-up for himself.

Devdas, in love with his childhood sweetheart - Paro (Mahi Gill), finds it difficult to accept the same in front of his family members and oppose them. Since the couple differs in status as well as caste, with Devdas being the more privileged one, their marriage is inconceivable. Paro is married off to a wealthy and aged widower. Dev is sent to Calcutta, where he meets prostitute Chandramukhi (Kalki). It is here that his unbearable sense of guilt leads to his destruction.
