Daddy Cool Pre-release Review
Okay, it was known that 'Daddy Cool' is a remake (note official) of the British comedy 'Death At A Funeral'.
However, what no one expected was that the Hindi movie will be a scene-by-scene copy of the British flick. Right from the setting to the clothes worn by the actors to the dialogues (they seem to be a Hindi translation of the original dialogues), there is not even an iota of novelty in the film. In fact, it seems that creative team behind 'Daddy Cool' had gone off to sleep, while making the movie.

However, 'Daddy Cool' goes a step further. It makes you cringe at the drab scenes and crass dialogues. 'Grossness' is the only word that comes to your mind, when the crude humor of the comedy flick is unveiled. Still, the movie is at least tolerable till the interval, after which the quality of humor manages to go down only. Thankfully, the songs have been kept limited - one at the start and one towards the end.
Talking about the performances in 'Daddy Cool' doesn't make much sense, since the poor screenplay did not give the actors much scope to do anything. However, Suniel Shetty, Javed Jaffrey and Vrajesh Hirjee still managed to give a decent performance. Ashish Chaudhary did a pathetic job, while Chunkey Pandey wasn't simply needed. As for the actors, none of them did anything that was much noticeable. All in all, this is one film that you will be happy to have skipped with even a rented DVD, forget about the multiplex.
Daddy Cool Pre-release Review
Did you know that even a funeral can be full of sidesplitting humor? No? Then, K. Murli Mohan Rao's latest directorial venture 'Daddy Cool' will surely prove to be an eye opener for you. Produced by Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria, the comic flick is all set to be released under the banner of 'Maruti International', on 28th August 2009. Its star cast includes Suniel Shetty, Aftab Shivdasani, Aarti Chabria, Aashish Chaudhary, Kim Sharma, Sophie Choudhary, Rajpal Yadav, Tulip Joshi, Javed Jaffrey, and Prem Chopra.
The movie is set in Goa, where the funeral of 'Daddy Cool' Douglas Lazarus is taking place. However, rather than the usual tears, sad speeches and melancholia, this funeral results in a comic situation for the family members of the deceased, when the coffin makers deliver the wrong body. Now, we come across Steven Lazarus (Suniel Shetty), the good son of Douglas Lazarus, who is also an aspiring writer. His idea of giving his father a decent funeral is to deliver a eulogy in the latter's honor, which somehow describes the rivers of Goa as well.
Steven has a younger brother - Brian Lazarus (Ashish Chowdhry), who is charming, sophisticated and successful, everything that Steven is not. Brian has established himself as a respected writer in Mumbai and flows first class to his father's funeral. However, he is not ready to share the responsibility of his mother - Mrs. Lazarus (Suhasini Mulay), claiming that he hardly has enough money to "support himself and his dogs". Steven has a wife as well - Nancy (Aarti Chabria), who is trying to get away from her mother-in-law Mrs. Lazarus.
In order to rid herself of her mom-in-law, Nancy hires an estate agent Pinto (Vijay Patkar), who is trying to close a house deal for her. Then, we have Michael (Aftab Shivdasani), a prospective groom to a cousin, Maria (Tulip Joshi). Michael has to meet his soon-to-be father-in-law (Naseer Abdullah). In his nervousness, he ends up taking a hallucinogenic drug, given by Maria's junkie brother Harry's (Chunky Pandey), and becomes completely spaced out. On the other hand, Jim (Vrajesh Hirjee), a roadside Romeo, is trying to impress Maria on the funeral.
Yet another character in the story is Jenny (Kim Sharma), a suspicious wife who finds her husband Carlos (Javed Jaffrey) saying sorry to Ayesha (Sophie Chodhry), a super sexy model. Ayesha is looking forward to star in an ad film and for the purpose, had been asked to 'compromise' with a man in a black suit. Soon, she finds herself in a room full of potential employers. If that wasn't enough, we have a stupid old uncle as well, Uncle Murphy (Prem Chopra), who is wheelchair bound, but believes in practicing "rapchick" to get the girls.
Coming as the icing on the cake is the entry of Andrew (Rajpal Yadav), a 'blackmailer' who claims to have shocking secret about the deceased Douglas "Daddy Cool" Lazarus (Sharat Saxena). What follows his entry is a funny concoction of madness, chaos, and confusion, which ultimately results in comic situations for the audience. If you want to know what will happen to Steven, the proposed marriage between Michael and Maria, Ayesha's ad film and Andrew's blackmail scheme, wait for the movie's release - on 28th August.
