Asustek To Launch Low Cost Laptops In India

After making a mark for itself in the American market, the Taiwanese Company Asustek is looking next at India to launch its Eee PC range of low-cost laptops the coming year. The cheapest model is priced at Rs 13,000 inclusive of duties and the Taiwanese Company would have rolled out the laptops in the Indian market had it not been for the high demand generated that led to the sold out of its entire stock this year.

The Taiwanese Company Asustek claims to have sold four lakh Eee PCs in the initial two months following its launch in Taiwan. It has earmarked for itself a target of selling 40 lakh units in one year’s time next year. The US entry-level model of Eee PC is pegged at $199. The use of computers in India is low but on the rise and so it’s being viewed as a promising zone for its laptops by the Taiwanese company.

Officials from the Asustek Company said that they found most people use laptops for mostly surfing, e-mail, MSN and Skype purposes. And that the company built the Eee PC keeping these finding in mind and its features comprise a LAN card, Wi-Fi connectivity and USB ports but no optical driver. Moreover instead of using traditional memory of the kind employed in computers, the Eee PC uses the flash memory of cell phones.

The Eee PC is the size of small diary and weighs less than 1 kg. It operates on the Linux operating system and has storage capacity of 2 GB or 4 GB. Maximum sale happened in US because of parents who purchased the Eee PC for their five to six-year-old children. On the other hand, the company presumes the market for the Eee PC will be considerably different in India, where it will serve as more of an educational tool.
