Ingredients (For 4 servings)
- 3 pounds tart apples
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup rolled oats
- 4 tablespoons cold butter (1/2 stick)
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
Method
- Preheat the oven at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C), placing rack in the center of the oven.
- Butter a deep pie dish or a baking dish and keep it aside.
- Topping: Put flour, sugar, spices, butter, oats and nuts in a food processor and work it out till the mixture is crumbly. Butter pieces should not be visible. You can also use knives or hands to melt the butter pieces. Keep the topping aside.
- Filling: Peel the apples, core them and slice them into pieces, 1/4 inch (0.7 cm) thick. Put them into a large bowl and add brown sugar with lemon juice. Gently mix and transfer into the baking dish.
- After preparing the filling, pour the topping over the filling in the baking dish.
- Bake it for around 30 to 40 minutes, basically till the time the topping turns golden brown.
- Take out from oven and place it on a rack for cooling, at least 30 minutes before serving.
- Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
